The Deep Is Calling

In Psalm 42, the psalmist writes,“ Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls.” While this writer is going through pain and mourning, it makes me wonder if he’s telling us why we are all tempted to stay away from the ‘deep end‘. To be called and chosen by God is like swimming in the ocean. It’s powerful, beautiful, but frightening. Where the deep calls to deep. Where answers don’t come easy or they may not come at all. Where our pain is exposed and healing requires transformation. Deep calls out to deep, but sometimes our soul longs to stay in the shallow. In the deep, there are bigger monsters and depths, but it's also greater blessings and experiences. It will bring you to a place that will take you out of your comfort zone. From personal experience it can seem frightening, but what a compliment from God that he would see something in us that he would pull us away from the shore. It is too often that we are like Peter, stepping out unto the deep and then losing all faith. It doesn’t take extraordinary people to do great things for God. The disciples were just like us, but they tapped into something greater, something deeper. We need to stop saying “wow David or wow Elijah,” like they were someone we could never match up to. Sure, we have insecurities, flaws, and we beat ourselves up and say that “we don’t measure up”. We need to stop that, we need to have faith, believe, and go deeper because there could be a day that God calls you or me to call fire from Heaven. Today let’s not focus on our flaws or failures and remember that Jeremiah one and fifteen states; before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. God has created each of us for a specific reason, a purpose. Go further, no matter the cost, no matter the unanswered questions. Don’t be afraid of the deep.
