The Foundation

24 Therefore whosoever heareththese sayings of mine, and doeththem, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was foundedupon a rock.

26 And every one that heareththese sayings of mine, and doeththem not,

shall be likenedunto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Matthew 7:24-27

As young adults, we move out of our parents’ house to get something that belongs to you either by rent or purchase. There is a process that takes place within making things ready to move in. The first thing to do is to build a foundation starting with tools, dirt, or concrete to make preparations for the home. In our walk with Jesus, he must be the foundation, the mastermind and the author of our life. At times, we take Him out of the picture and try to do it yourself. Jesus talks in the scriptures above about a wise man and a foolish man. The wise man trusted and followed the commandments of Jesus, but the foolish man did not. He would have rather sped up the process to move not worrying about the foundation. The foolish man didn’t care who was apart or how it was built. He said, “I can handle this.” He wasn’t worried about the bigger picture. “I’ll just do what I want to do,” he said all the while building his house on the sand, not knowing what could have been waiting for him. He was not letting Jesus take control of the situation in his life. We also build our houses on the sand. We think it’s going great, then a storm comes destroying your home. This happened because we rushed what Jesus had for us. We do this thinking life looks better anywhere other than where we are. The foundation breaks, pushing us into brokenness we didn’t have to experience firsthand.

48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. But there was a man who stepped back humbled himself before Jesus, prayed and listened for his voice so when the time was come God said build this house upon this Rock. The storm came and the wind blew, and the waters rushed against the Rocks where the house sat. Luke 6:48-49

Remember when you build your foundation, keep Jesus, the rock, first and your house will be stronger than you could’ve ever imagined. This will give you the confidence during the storm to help those arround you. Scripture says, “Fall on the rock or the rock will fall on you,” building your house on that rock, and you’ll never have to worry because he’ll be with you!
